Lyndon B. Johnson's first inauguration in color (Dallas, Texas, 1963)

Lyndon B. Johnson 1963 inauguration in Dallas, Texas

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963 - almost 50 years ago. Vice president Lyndon B. Johnson was swiftly sworn in aboard Air Force One with former first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, at his side. Cecil Stoughton, who had been president Kennedy's official photographer, captured the ceremony.

The original photo was captured in black and white. I've colorized the picture in Photoshop in an attempt to bring the picture to life. Where possible I have researched everything from the color of Jacqueline Kennedy's pink Channel outfit to that of Lyndon Johnson's Silver Star lapel pin. Of course, some of the colors are guesswork, since I am not aware of any color footage of the Dallas Love Field inauguration.

The original picture is in the public domain, cf. Wikipedia. However, the colorized version above is copyrighted as a derivative work.
